A New Symbolic Historical Memorial Will Be Created Paying Tribute to the Fighters and Victims of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

An integral part of PHN Group’s activities, especially in Warsaw, where most of the company’s properties are located, is to support and spread historical memory. PHN will soon create a new symbolic memorial at its INTRACO Prime office building in tribute to the fighters and victims of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

Not far from the area where PHN Group’s new office building INTRACO Prime was recently built, Muranów Square was located until the end of World War II. During the ghetto uprising, it was the site of fierce fighting between insurgents from the Jewish Military Union grouped there and German troops suppressing the uprising. Shortly after the end of the war, Muranów Square, due to the scale of the destruction, was dismantled and the street layout was completely transformed.

The INTRACO Prime premium office building is located within the boundaries of the former building at 6 Muranowska Street. At the end of 1942, a tunnel was dug from the basement under the ghetto wall leading to the tenement at 7-9 Muranowska Street, where the headquarters of the Jewish Military Union was located. The tunnel was used to transport people, food and weapons. After heavy fighting in the first days of the ghetto uprising, dozens of fighters from the Jewish Military Union evacuated through the tunnel. Two years later, during the Warsaw Uprising, this tenement, defended by soldiers of the “Zemsta” (Revenge) company of the “Pięść” (Fist) battalion, was completely destroyed.

To keep the memory of these events alive, PHN plans to install on one of the pillars in front of the INTRACO Prime building three symbolic commemorative plaques, which will feature information about the history of the site written in three languages: Polish, English and Hebrew. The plaques were designed by two artists affiliated with the Faculty of Sculpture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw – Katarzyna Szarek and Maciej Aleksandrowicz. At present, work on the design has been completed and PHN has applied for the relevant administrative decisions. The commemorative plaques will complement existing memorials to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in the area, including the fighting in Muranów Square.

“Our INTRACO and INTRACO Prime properties are located in a special place, which witnessed important historical events and is thus part of the historical and cultural heritage of Warsaw and Poland. We feel obliged to pay tribute to the brave fighters and residents who fought in the ghetto uprising and to preserve the memory of the extraordinary history of this place,” said Marcin Mazurek, President of the Management Board of Polski Holding Nieruchomości S.A.

PHN’s showcase is the insurgent anchor, the symbol of Fighting Poland, which has been displayed on the facades of the INTRACO skyscraper and other buildings for a decade on the occasion of anniversaries of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising. PHN is actively engaged in the celebration of other important historical events, such as the successive anniversaries of Poland’s independence and the commemoration of the Battle of Warsaw.
