A design competition for the Fish Pier in Gdynia is now open

Friday, May 22, 2026 - 13:15

Polski Holding Nieruchomości, in cooperation with the Municipality of Gdynia and the Association of Polish Architects (SARP), announces an urban and architectural competition for the development of a conceptual masterplan for the redevelopment of the Fish Pier (Molo Rybackie) area in Gdynia. The goal of this joint initiative is to develop a unique vision for this prestigious location, which is intended to become the new heart of Gdynia and a modern, fully accessible space for both residents and visitors.

The competition will select the best concept for the development of one of the most attractive sites on the Polish coast. The organisers’ intention is to create a space that fosters urban development, harmoniously combining public, recreational, residential, and commercial functions, while drawing on the best examples of Gdynia’s modernist heritage.

Particular emphasis is placed on designing a space that naturally integrates the historic waterfront with Gdynia’s dynamically developing city centre. The proposed concept is expected to go beyond a standard investment framework, aiming to create a multi-layered public space that seamlessly connects land and sea. The Fish Pier area, currently largely isolated from the urban fabric, is expected to become fully inclusive and form a natural continuation of the city’s main representative axes. Thanks to a well-considered urban layout, the waterfront will become a new, vibrant heart of Gdynia, where contemporary architecture coexists with maritime tradition, ensuring open access to the shoreline and uninterrupted contact with the water for residents and tourists alike.

We are commencing the development of a comprehensive urban and architectural vision for the Fish Pier area, fully aware of the uniqueness of this place. Our priority is to return this area to Gdynia and its residents as an attractive, vibrant urban fabric. We want the proposed architectural solutions not only to define a new aesthetic quality, but above all to create a place for meetings, walks and everyday activity accessible to everyone – says Wiesław Malicki, President of the Management Board of Polski Holding Nieruchomości S.A.

Cooperation between PHN and the City of Gdynia, with substantive support provided by SARP experts, ensures the highest competition standards. The developed concept is intended to serve as a foundation for the further development of the area, integrating its historic port heritage with the requirements of modern, sustainable urban planning.

It is very important for the city that the new development in the Fish Pier area is attractively and pedestrian-friendly connected with the system of public spaces in Gdynia’s city centre. On the pier itself, buildings intended for publicly accessible functions, as well as gastronomic and cultural uses, should be created so that this space has attractive activity generators and becomes a vibrant fabric of a coastal city – adds Maciej Zielonka, Deputy Mayor of Gdynia.

The competition will be held in a two-stage format. The selection of the best submissions will be overseen by a competition jury composed of distinguished architects and urban planners affiliated with SARP, as well as representatives of PHN, the municipal authorities of Gdynia, and the Provincial Monument Conservator.

I would like to sincerely thank PHN and the City of Gdynia for their trust. The competition is an invitation to think about the waterfront landscape in a responsible, sustainable way, responding to contemporary urban challenges. We expect bold, modern proposals that at the same time respect the historic and port character of the area. The organisation of the competition together with the Association of Polish Architects also guarantees high procedural standards, a transparent set of rules, and respect for participants’ rights. We invite and encourage everyone interested to participate in the competition – adds architect Natalia Balcerzak, President of the SARP Wybrzeże Branch.

Detailed regulations and competition guidelines will be published on the official websites of the organisers.
